Sant Martí de Biert (10th, 12th, 18th and 19th centuries)

Sant Martí de Biert (10th, 12th, 18th and 19th centuries)

Documented in 968, this church was rebuilt at the start of the 11th century and again in the 12th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries there were further alterations, which gave the church its current form. The present structure, of a single nave with a semicircular apse, belongs to the 12th century alterations. In the 18th century side chapels were built on either side of the nave, which give the image of a false transept. In the 19th century the outer door was altered on the south side, and the present bell tower was built, with its twin-arched gable. On the west of the church there is the rectory, and by the side there is a small cemetery. After a period of lying derelict due to the depopulation of the surrounding area, the church was recently restored.
