Sant Vicenç de Canet Church (9th, 11th and 16th centuries)
Sant Vicenç de Canet Church (9th, 11th and 16th centuries)
This parish church was documented in 822. The origins of the present building are a Romanesque church from the 9th century, with important alterations in the 16th century (the date 1560 is marked above the door). In 1936 it was partially damaged by fire (especially the altar and the parish archive) and it was turned into a store.
The basic structure of the Romanesque building has been retained, with three naves and three apses, and is visible from the south side and in the apses, decorated with lesenes on the outside. The 16th century alterations gave the church its current form. The west façade was altered, with a rose window and a moulded, Renaissance style door, with an overhang above and decorated springers. This is also when the bell tower was built, located in the middle of the central nave, and square in shape. Three side chapels were added, and also a comunidor.
