Volcano Banya del Boc

The Banya del Boc volcano (250 ha), at Sant Martí de Llémena, is one of the best examples of volcanic activity from the Quaternary period in Catalonia outside of the Garrotxa.
The crater measure 1,300 by 860m and reaches a depth of 100m. The area is geologically unique, constituting a volcanic cone open to the Vall de Llémena and a thick layer of basalt lava which created the Sant Joan plain.
The vegetation of the Banya del Boc volcano comprises one of the best examples of the Mediterranean landscape of the Catalan transversal system. As well as the typical communities in Mediterranean environments such as holm oak, cork oak and a shrubby undergrowth, there is also pasture land with aphyllanthoideae and meadows of common thatching grass.
