Sant Gregori Church (9th, 11th, 16th and 18th centuries)

Sant Gregori Church (9th, 11th, 16th and 18th centuries)

Documented in 882, the current building is Romanesque, from the 11th century, and was the object of alterations in the 16th and 18th centuries. It comprises of a nave, a large transept, and three apses, of which two remain, and decorated with lesenes on the outside. The choir was built in the 16th century, and in the 17th centuries the Roser and Sant Crist chapels, as well as the bell tower. This is square, above the transept, with two floors and a pyramidal roof. In the 18th century the sacristy was built and the building was extended to the west, with the construction of the new Sagrat Cor and Sant Andreu chapels, the comunidor and the present façade. During the interior restoration work in 1984, three wooden lipsanothecas were found with relics and documents from the 11th to 14th centuries, amongst which were the church's act of consecration. Behind, there is a Gothic cross from the 15th century, which was destroyed in 1936 and later restored. In 1998 the outside of the church was restored. From 1971 the new church dedicated to Saint Mary in the centre of the town fulfils almost all of the parish functions.
