Rocacorba (12th, 15th and 18th centuries)
From Rocacorba castle, a true castle amongst the rocks, one can see occasional remains of reused stone and the odd stretch of scree on the rocks, below the sanctuary. The castle, documented in 1130, was the centre of a barony at the beginning of the 15th century, took part in the Guerra dels Remences peasant rebellion and straight after, when the family moved to Serralta, the castle began is decline and fell into ruin, which culminated in the construction of the present Mare de Déu de Rocacorba sanctuary, in the 18th century, on top of the previous Santa Maria de Rocacorba church. Destroyed by the 1428 earthquake, the church was rebuilt in several stages.
The building has a single nave, with a rectangular apse, a side chapel and a square bell tower with a pyramidal roof. In front of the façade, which is very simple and features a rose window, there is a small porch, which protects the main door, which itself has a rounded voussoir arch. Inside, there is a modern copy of the image of the Mother of God of Rocacorba, a Gothic work which is kept in Girona Art Museum. During some restoration work, the semicircular apse of the old Romanesque church was discovered, dating back to the 13th century, under the floor of the present apse. On the side of the sanctuary there are guest lodgings, which are currently closed.
