Sant Joan de Montbó (11th and 17th centuries)

Sant Joan de Montbó (11th and 17th centuries)

This old parish church, which was a suffragan to Santa Cecília de Montcal for many years, has not hosted worship since the end of the 19th century. Even though it is not mentioned in documents until 1200, its layout shows it is from the 11th or early 12th centuries. It is a Romanesque building comprising a single nave and semicircular apse, and the original structure has not been altered, apart from the addition of the sacristy on the south side. The main façade, facing west, was altered in the 16th or 17th century. The door has a rounded voussoir arch and above it there is a small window in the shape of a cross, which has been partially bricked up. Rising above the nave and crowning the façade is the bell tower, which is square with a pyramidal roof. In front, there is the imprint of an atrium, which no longer exists.
