Santa Cecília de Montcal (11th, 12th and 16th centuries)

Santa Cecília de Montcal (11th, 12th and 16th centuries)

This parish church was documented in 1057. The present building is from the 12th century with later additions. It initially formed part of the provostry of Agost of Girona Cathedral, a feudal domain that caused conflicts due to the barley stored in the church's coffers.

The original Romanesque church consisted of a nave with a semicircular apse. Later, a second nave, in a Gothic style, was added to the south, and a sacristy and a chapel on the northern side. The western façade is very simple, with a rounded voussoir arch and two small rose windows, one for each nave. The square bell tower rises above the nave's vault, on the eastern side. On each side there are two levels of double round-arched windows, even though these are bricked up on the lower level, crowned by merlons and a pyramidal roof.
