Congregation of St. Afra

St. Afra has traditionally had a great devotion among the people of Girona for their relationship with Saint Narcís. Since the mid-eighteenth century there is evidence of pilgrimages to the shrine.

According to tradition, in the early fourth-century the bishop St. Narcissus and his deacon St. Felix arrived in the German city of Augsburg. They were hosted by Afra, a wife of pagan religion who had been devoted to Venus. Having known Saint Narcissus, Afra was converted to Christianity. The next day of their stay, the prefect of the city knew of the stay of both Christians at Afra's home, and he ordered to burn Afra alive in a stick of the river Lech.
