The Knight of Arnau Cartellà

The Knight of Arnau Cartellà

Under the orders of Charlemagne, Arnau Cartellà helped the release of Girona against the siege of the Saracens in the eighth century. The legend tells that one of the battles against the Saracens, near the forest of Taialà, the lord of Cartellà was being threatened and persecuted by Muslims, galloping toward the castle of Cartellà. When he reached the fortress, the castle drawbridge was raised and it was impossible to cross the stream. Threatened by the pursuit of the Saracens, the lord of Cartellà invoked the aid of Our Lady of Hope and promised to erect a chapel if the Lady saved him of that danger. Suddenly his horse crossed the moat of the castle in a leap and he was saved. The lord of Cartellà, in fulfillment of his promise, he built the chapel in honor of Santa Maria de la Esperanza in the spot where his horse had landed after the miraculous jump.
